Healthcare IT SupportWill 2013 be known as the year of the “Big Switch” in the US healthcare market? According to Healthcare IT News, many electronic health record systems are continuing to fall short of expectations with their users.

17,000 EHR adopters were surveyed and approximately 17% of medical practices are looking at making a switch from their current EHR by the end of 2013.

Doug Brown, managing partner of Black Book said in the Healthcare IT news article “the high performance vendors emerging as viable past 2015 are those dedicating responsive teams to address customers’ current demands.”

On the brink of stage 2, officials say provider demands are increasing. Electronic Health Record users polled have cited numerous cases of EHR software vendors underperforming. Some are underperforming badly enough to lose crucial market share. Vendors are struggling to keep up.

EHR user concerns are focused around sophisticated interfaces with other practice programs, complex connectivity and networking schemes, and the rapid EHR adoption with mobile devices. EHR vendors are preoccupied with backlogged implementations and selling their products while neglecting development issues.

Brown also mentioned in the article that many Meaningful Use incentives created an artificial market for dozens of immature EHR products

Some popular “One size fits all” EHR products have also failed to meet the requirements for several areas of medical specialists. These solutions cannot continue to satisfy their current client base because of a serious lack of customizable tools. Nephrologists have the highest level of discontent, 88% have said their EHR systems cannot meet their needs. Urology, ophthalmology and gastroenterology also claim to have high levels of discontent.

Many medical specialists indicated they were dissatisfied enough with their health records systems to consider making a switch.
