Watch out for cut-rate managed IT services
Recently I lost a prospect for managed IT services to a competitor that quoted a price much lower – like 2 or 3 times lower – than mine. The prospect said our services were identical, so he picked – let’s call them Lowball IT – over us. Smart decision, right? Why pay 2 or 3 times as much for the same thing?
Maybe he’ll be happy with Lowball IT – but I doubt it. There’s a reason they’re 2 or 3 times less than us and there’s a reason we’re 2 or 3 times more than them. And it’s likely that eventually something will happen and he’ll discover that low price is going to cost him a lot more than he would have paid us.

First off, Lowball IT always seems like a good idea – get the same service for a much lower price. We had two clients who, despite great service from us, left us because Lowball IT promised them such incredible savings. Both clients came back to us in less than 6 months because Lowball IT couldn’t deliver on their promises and didn’t deliver nearly the same level of service and expertise. Lowball IT wasn’t nearly as responsive and couldn’t solve issues as quickly; and instead of preventing problems BEFORE they happen like we did, Lowball IT simply reacted to problems AFTER they happened and caused disruptions for the client. Those two clients quickly realized that a much lower price meant much higher costs, more problems, and more frustration and they came back to our superior service and value.
Even more importantly, Lowball IT may seem like a good idea when there are no issues and everything is humming along great. But when something goes wrong – ransomware, a server crash, missing emails, whatever – businesses discover that Lowball IT’s solutions often can’t recover the data or fix things quickly. Their solutions were low-priced because they didn’t provide the same level of function or weren’t implemented well or didn’t cover all the bases. So the recovery takes that much longer – if they can recover at all – and the business spends a lot of money on downtime, lost productivity, and extra IT charges for a problem that should never have happened in the first place. All those monthly savings quickly disappear.
The truth is that REAL managed IT services that prevent problems, provide real security, keep systems running fast and reliably, and can recover quickly from any disaster cost real money but deliver real value. Watch out for Lowball IT – that low price could end up costing you a lot more in the long run.
